DCYF Update 5/21/18

How did we get here?

Governor Inslee signed HB 1661 in July of 2017 creating the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF). July 1, 2018 DSHS/CA and DEL will merge to form the new DCYF. Multiple reports to the legislature are due in November and December of 2018. This will inform the decision making about the addition of DSHS/JR to DCYF. It is important to note that the law is written to include DSHS/JR effective in 2019.

What is happening now?

Our Union bargaining team has now met with the employer for our fourth and fifth bargaining sessions over the many facets of implementing this new agency. Ross Hunter joined us to thank all of you for your critical work and communicate his desire for DCYF to truly be an employer of choice. We then focused on additional new agency policies and signed agreements that protect current working conditions related to probation and “Appendix B flexibility.” We will continue bargaining over several meetings and months to address many things such as work locations and remaining critical agency policies. Our Union bargaining team is Cynthia Marcyes, Damon Corrigan and Rita Swanson from DEL, Sandra Hilzendeger, Charles Loeffler and Joyce Murphy from DSHS/CA, Gabe Hall from DSHS/JR, WFSE President Sue Henricksen, and WFSE Staff Laura Hartless and Amy Spiegel.
